Various Weather Elements And How They Can Affect Your Roof

Lori Silva

Your roofing system comprises various parts, including the decking, which reinforces the roof itself and at the same time serves as the base for the roofing material. Beneath it is the attic that must be well ventilated to protect you from the summer heat. You also have an underlay membrane that shields the roofing material from the resin in the wood decking. All these parts and others work together to protect you and your belongings from weather elements. But as time goes on, different weather elements affect your structure in various ways, as seen below.

Effects of Rain

Rain is everywhere, and your roof is there to ensure that not one drop reaches your home's interior parts. However, with time, rain can ruin the roofing system leading to mold, misplaced shingles, rotting wood, holes, and gaps. The severity of the damages depends on your roof's age, the amount of rain, and whether you take the initiative to schedule roof inspections and maintenance whenever it rains. Also, damage may be more apparent if the roof is not installed correctly. If you want to minimize the effects of rain on your roof, hire an expert to conduct inspections, before the rains start, to take care of the weak points and address any damages.

Effects of Strong Winds

Strong winds are detrimental too and can blow with enough force to lift the gutter system and tiles. Sometimes they may even affect the roof's structural frame. It is recommended that even if the damages are not too obvious, it is safer if you hire a roofer to check your roof, more so if you see trees and shrubs scattered around your yard. These signs indicate that the winds were too strong and could have damaged your roof in one way or another. Failure to do so can leave you dealing with leaks if it rains again.

Effects From Changes in Temperatures

Extreme temperatures can be stressful mainly because they are not always constant. This can cause your shingles to become loose, crumbled, or detached. You may also notice some fading, or they might come off around the chimneys. Contact your roofer right away whenever you see these kinds of damages. They will assess the situation to determine the extent of the damage and apply the best solution.

Even though your roof is vulnerable to all these weather elements, you do not have to sit and watch it wear. Regular inspections and timely repairs can keep your roof functional for longer, so hire a roofing contractor.
